Translation - a way of life
~ One person's story ~
Like many of my colleagues, i did not deliberately set out to work as translator but found myself drawn into this endeavour while pursuing other things. A broad education, work experience in several countries, and extensive practical experience in different areas of information transfer (for example: teaching language, music, and internet theory, training service industry staff, working as tour guide, writing user and technicians' service manuals for audio-visual equipment) have equipped me with the skills necessary to handle translations in a creative and flexible manner and to move across specialization boundaries with ease.
Although i translate material in many fields, including science and technology, my main skill is in the area of cross-cultural translation, i.e., translation that takes into account differences in value systems, attitudes, and communication methods. As practicing philosopher with a strong interest in negotiation and diplomacy i enjoy tackling unusual texts that are not necessarily defined within any particular field of expertise.
Some of my work in the last few years: an abstract of a sociology thesis; an info pamphlet for a new-age film on nature and art; excerpts from Japanese family law; miscellaneous documents like family registries, residence certificates, driving licences, and university graduation certificates; a detailed professional CV; descriptions of historical sites and mini-bios of siginificant persons of the Ryukyu Kingdom; a court judgement; documents pertaining to academic appointments; immigration related personal documents; tourism brochures; a tourism related video narration with subtitles; a paper on a territorial dispute between China and Japan; a short manual describing the state of the art in LED technology and its practical applications.
A keyword list: education, pedagogy, diplomacy, mediation, ecology, music, electronics, radio communications, linguistics, poetry, philosophy, religion, tourism, culture, website translation
"I produce translations that make practical sense."
In addition to translating myself, i manage translation projects that involve more than one translator. My collaborators in this context are other translators from Okinawa and Taiwan.

Note 1: Binding estimates can be given only after i have assessed the source material.
Note 2: Actual rates depend on the kind, complexity, and format of the source material, the formatting,
the deadline, etc. Rush jobs typically cost 30-100% more than regular jobs.
The information shown here can therefore serve as a rule-of-thumb guide for budgeting purposes.
